Terry Swails & Carolyn Wettstone
The presentation and book signing was a great success. Terry and Carolyn were very informative. The program was about weather, but they went into detail about the tornado that hit Parkersburg and the floods that destroyed many areas in Iowa last year.
If you missed the presentation, the library has both books that they have written. Un-Natural Disasters and Superstorms.
Dont’s forget to check out Terry’s website: http://www.terryswails.com/

Snow! Snow! Snow!
We have been wondering when it is going to stop snowing. We haven’t seen this much snow in years. Since we have so much I thought it would be nice to know a little bit more about snow.
Interesting Snow Facts
- Guess what, it can get cold enough that it doesn’t snow! Because snow is frozen water, if there are not enough water droplets in the air it can’t snow.
- You probably know that it snows when water is lifted into the sky from rivers, lakes, and oceans as water vapor. You can not see water vapor but it is there. There is enough in the air to cover the earth with 3 feet of water. The warmer the air the more water vapor there is.
- You can make your own cloud by breathing in cold weather. Or, try breathing on a mirror; there will be a clear gray cloud on it!
- For it to snow the tops of the clouds must be below 0 degrees Celsius, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Snow can come from any cloud that is layered.
- Sometimes the snow can be feet deep in one place while it is bare in another because the wind has blown all the snow off that spot.
- As snow falls snowflakes connect to make bigger snowflakes.
- Snow at the North and South Pole reflect heat into space!! That happens because the ice acts like a mirror with the heat of the sun, and the heat bounces off the ice and into space.
Places I would rather be instead of here with all the beautiful snow.

The Library Board has been working with an architect to create plans about each of the proposed library sites. They have created plans for each site.
These are the plans for the current Carnegie Library with a new addition.

This is the plan for the Harding School site.

We have a talented patron, who transformed the Children’s Department drop box into a beautiful dog house with Booker the dog. Come in and see what a great job she did.

We are getting ready to start the Summer Reading Program. This year we will have a program for all ages. There is a Family Reading Group, a Young Adult/Tween Reading Group and the Children’s Reading Group.
The programs will be from June 11th – July 27th.
Thanks to Lanie, one of our talented staff, we have character stand ups for the children to get their picture taken with. They are great.
Some of our staff have already tried them.

Notes on the Margin
There are a few very well crafted books recently added to the library collection.
COBRA II by Gordon, Michael is available in both print and audiobook formats. It is the inside story of the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Very solid material and discussion of the battle plan and what went wrong.
STATE OF WAR by Risen, James is a dramatic account of the political events behind the Iraq invasion and occupation. It also is available in print and audiobook formats. Just the subtitle alone ought to entice you to head down to the library — “SECRET HISTORY OF THE CIA” Wow, ’nuff said.
Then there are 2 I probably won’t get many takers on — but, are these well crafted and fun!
You could actually learn to write by studying these two titles. Written by pros . . .
GAUDEAMUS by Barnes, John is only in text. It is science fiction written like the campy late 1950s Black and White films. Barnes is a Professor of Theater Arts in Colorado and uses himself in the first person throughout the text. Characters are very well drawn. As I read I could see it both film, stage play and even musical in the “Little Shop of Horrors” vein.
The final entry is also science fiction OLD MAN’S WAR by Scalzi, John is a further extetion of the 50’s style swashbuckling adventure.Again, it is an object lesson in writing a well crafted work.
